This site is great! I discovered it when looking for information on the California African American Museum. Right now I was doing a search for the 2028 Olympic Games that will be held in Los Angeles. Has anyone announced an exhibition for those Games?
Thank you!l

Thank you for your message and your interest in Culture Type. On April 7, Culture Type published two articles paying tribute to Washington, D.C., artist and master printer Lou Stovall (1937-2023). The posts celebrate his life and work through a series of remembrances from artists, curators, his studio assistants, and others. Currently, the articles are available online only and can be found at the links below:

This is a love note to Victoria L. Valentine!
Over the last few years, I have come to rely on CultureType to keep me aware of artists, art, museums, galleries, and authors/publications from a dedicated Black perspective that has also expansively opened my knowledge of the art world. I have seen more exhibitions than I ever would have before; shopped publications to the point of joyful obsession — However, I now have contact with bookstores and galleries on a global scale in my various quests to find “sold out / out of print titles.
I can’t adequately express how valuable this website is to me. My monthly donation is but a token, but it is a dedicated and heartfelt one!
Thank you for filling a unique and much-needed niche in the publishing world, digital and otherwise. All honor is due! My very best wishes for your continued success!

Excellent website and information on our artists. I am an artist and just came upon the YouTube video about 2021 Exhibitions of Black Female artists and was thrown by the image of Victoria Valentine speaking. She looks like she could be my fraternal twin (and I don’t look like everybody) and she has my maiden name. I hope this gets to her and we connect to explore this.

AS a regular subscriber to Culture Type since a special projects person whom I met at Harlem Hospital when I did a web project with Columbia about the WPA murals there suggested I should be—I am disappointed that you only mentioned Ashes to Ashes, because All Me: The Life and Times of Winfred Rembert is a feature documentary that has toured the country and beyond since 2011 and has garnered many audience awards at major doc festivals and beyond..www.allmethemovie.com. It is the publicist from the upcoming book who got the New Yorker to do all the PR for Ashes to Ashes which is a far less elegant film that has less about Winfred than ours (fact, not sour grapes.). I could send you a link to my own google drive or you could watch it here on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/All-Me-Times-Winfred-Rembert/dp/B007QW558M. If you look at the site on these pages http://allmethemovie.com/. and http://www.allmethemovie.com/screenings.html (scroll down) you will see how extensive the exposure on that film has been since it premiered in 2011. I love your blog and share it with people all the time. Just wanted to set the record straight and introduce you to a substantial film about the late Winfred.

Most folks have heard about Africobra. However those same folks do not know Africobra had a youthful peer in B.A.G.: The Black Arts Guild. B.A.G. was formed without its founder even knowing of Africobra. B.A.G. was about facilitating the transition form youthful gifted artists into professional artists beyond the limited curricuclum of schools while bringing visual aspects of the Black Cultural Revolution to the mainstream. Founded in 1970 and decommissioned in 1978, B.A.G. was successful. http://www.afrofuture.blogspot.com has insights about B.A.G.

This is a tremendous resource and voice. On balance I wish it would shed more light on the radical and innovative aspects of working visual artists who do not meet the politics of the mainstream.
For example, most of what was and still is of the “Black Art Movement” happened without the approval or accepting politics of the mainstream. The likes of B.A.G.: The Black Arts Guild and Africobra, both of Chicago, were prolific with great impact….all without real time participation of the mainstream.

Hello,
I’d like to share an art collaboration between two artists from Cleveland, Ohio and Alberta, Calgary. We created artwork in response to a Washington Post article about how black people are being harassed and profiled for wearing masks during COVID-19 pandemic.

This is one of my top five favorite art sites to routinely visit every week. Thanks for including an article on the street/graffiti/urban artists who completed the beautiful Maya Angelou murals in LA. Most black art blog or websites don’t include them. Did not know about the female artist, Victoria Cassinova from LA!!! So now I am a fan of her art. Also, another black artist, NUNCA (Francisco Rodrigues) was not listed in your article but did a mural. He is Afro-Brazilian, and has created many murals in the US and around the world. Also his artwork has been in many US urban art group shows. Keep up the good work!!!!!

A great resource for those interested in African American art. I am
a major collector of the works of the late, great Purvis Young. One of my
missions in life is to get Purvis, who was my friend, the lasting
recognition he truly deserves. According to William Arnett, editor
of Souls Grown Deep, Purvis was perhaps the greatest ” pure painter ”
among a group of twentieth century ” vernacular African American painters ” from the South.
