Philadelphia, Pa.-born, New London, Conn.-based Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) is best known for his powerful portrait paintings. Curated by Elizabeth Sann, this exhibition taps into the visionary, cosmic, and Afrofuturist symbolism that threads his practice. The presentation brings together works from across his oeuvre—portraiture, compositional still lifes, landscapes, works on paper, and photography—dating from 1968 to 2016. The title of exhibition is drawn from the 1972 film by Sun Ra (1914-1993), the experimental jazz composer and icon of Afrofuturism. CT
