FOR HER FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION with Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, Caroline Kent is presenting a suite of large-scale paintings. Kent explores the intersection of language, abstraction, and painting. She begins by covering her canvases with black paint, creating a “non-space” of “unlocatability.” From there, the artist begins to build up her surfaces by adding cut-paper shapes and forms and a series of patterns and marks. The result is improvisational paintings informed by color, geometry, and choreography. The works call to mind a range of influences, including the cut-outs of Henri Matisse, the oeuvre of Mexican sculptor and painter Pedro Coronel, and “Watusi (Hard Edge),” a 1963 painting by Alma Thomas. Kent lives and works in Chicago, where she received this year’s Artadia Award. Her practice is an exercise in translation. In her artist statement, Kent says in part: “Painting is not a means to an end but a beginning, through which I can freely consider how producing pictures in the world can potentially operate and stimulate how we think about communicative structures.… Much like watching a foreign language film without subtitles, I ask, what are the registers for relating word to image and language to form.” CT
